Key Questions to Ask Prospective Bankruptcy Attorneys

  • What are your education and training credentials?
  • What are your areas of expertise?
  • Are you in good standing with the state bar association (verify with the state bar)?
  • How many bankruptcy filings do you manage per year?
  • How often will we meet to prepare for filings?
  • How much will the entire bankruptcy filing process cost?
  • How long will the bankruptcy process take?
  • How and who will notify affected creditors?
  • What is the bankruptcy filing process (step-by-step)?
  • Who will do the work on my file? If it is not the attorney, ask to meet the person who will work on your filing, and ask lots of questions of that person.
  • Ask for a written agreement that outlines the services you will receive and how much they will cost.
  • Do you have former clients that I could speak with about your service (three references should be enough … one recent, one within last three years, and one over five years ago)?
